and since Mrs Boost Addict is out of town at the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival I am revisiting my Spotify Alternative R&B playlist... ah....
been a while... but the groove is satisfying.
ask me questions about tract or s or sheep, and I’ll answer them while listening to Rayana Jay, Parisalexa, and the O’my’s Featuring Chance the Rapper...

Not much, at least at the scale we are operating. We aren’t doing this to get rich, in fact we couldn’t afford to do this unless I had inherited well, which I did... Our ultimate goal, after using the money my dad so thoughtfully left me to buy the farm (so to speak) and equipment is to pay for food and bills and not much else, but be o ur own bosses, set our own hours, work for ourselves, know that we directly ben efit from our efforts and all that jazz.
At our current scale we are at a best case scenario of about $2 0k/yr net, but since we are still growing our flock and equipping the farm we are definitely in what the economists call the “E xistence ” phase of our business... hopefully, now that our large expenses are sunk, next year will get us to “Survival” and if we continue to have success in marketing (which we are so far...) we may reach “Success” in only our third year, meaning we can stop paying bills with inheritance , and live fully on sheep income. We hope to grow the flock in the next two years to get us to a point where we can net ~$ 40K.
If we have a runaway success and are able to start competing with the local Organic Vegetable Empire for the land previously belonging to failed dairy farms we could theoretically manage a flock that net’d $ 100K a year without hiring help, but we are realistic...
it’s a great lifestyle though, as long as you never want to leave home for more than a day at a time. Our farm is sustainable, sequesters carbon, and is resource efficient, so we can feel good about that too.

As an outdoorsman I lament the disappearance of real wool clothing. Specifically their unquestioned replacement with thin and delicate Merino wool ladie’s separates for the rugged male inner city dweller. Where can one still find a decent sweater or long wearing pants?
Bonus “Is he drunk enough to reply” question: What is your favorite sheep joke?

it was Mrs. BoostAddict who got us where we are...
I grew up in a rural, farming community. All my friends growing up were children of dairy farmers, and I although I come from a long line of teachers and academics (seriously, going back 100's of years), the farming life had always appealed to me... I failed at being an academic, (by seeing what was involved and saying “fuck this shit”) and although I have very marketable skills and relevant education for modern light manufacturing and high-tech production, I hated every minute of my time in the Corporate world... the high 5-figure pay did not make up for it...
Mrs. BoostAddict had been in Human Services, and after about ten years of that she couldn’t stomach any more of the sad state of humanity... so she quit and tried to run away and start a farm with her then-girlfriend-then-wife and and eventually ended up as the herd manager for a Goat dairy. She discovered she liked small ungulates, and disliked her deadbeat wife and got a divorce. The small sheep flock she had been nurturing with the idea of making it a going business nearly got the 100% ax in the divorce, but she held on, and when we met she had 5 sheep, a dream, and 7 years experience in managing genetics and nutrition for a 100+ herd, I was looking to get out of Industry, and then my dad died and I became moderately wealthy and we both said “fuck this, lets start a sheep farm!”
and so it began.
She manages the animals. I manage the equipment, we work well together, and we both like sheep more than we like most other humans, so it’s a good fit.

jesus, I don’ t even know any sheep jokes. How fuckin’ lame is that?
As far as real wool clothing? whew... it is getting hard to find sadly... It really is the Shit, and I know what you mean. Wool is a fantastic fiber, and it is really hard to beat for certain applications, just like the official Antarctic Jackets issued to all residents of McMurdo station are still goose down...
these are NOT CHEAP, but they are about the best that’ s still out there:
